Yes, literacy skills can still grow over the holidays! There is a great list of tips on ABC Life Literacy Canada's website to help your family continue to learn while they are out of school. I can easily see using these suggestions while celebrating, shopping and relaxing during the season. These are all tips that you can use for tasks that you are already planning to do such as: writing Christmas cards, making lists for gifts and groceries, and singing carols since they all incorporate reading and writing. I have to say though that my favourite tips would be: reading around the fireplace drinking hot chocolate, and baking cookies!
Also, when buying gifts for children you can always look for things that involve reading and writing, in addition to books. For example, great video game suggestions and reviews can be found at the Gamer Pops website, and you can always choose board games since they are a great way to get kids talking, reading and playing with words.
