Pam Allyn's Best Books for Boys: How to engage boys in reading in ways that will change their lives

Pam Allyn
Target Age

This book is a wonderful resource for teachers, and parents too, who want to encourage boys to read. It supports choice of reading materials, which includes boys reading newspapers, instruction manuals, sports statistics, web pages, etc. The first section of the book presents ideas for teachers, while the second section provides an extensive annotated list of books. The best part is how the list is organized. Books are organized by genre, such as Action and Adventure, Comic Books, and Graphic Novels. The books are organized according to reading abilities - emerging, developing and maturing reading levels. Each book has a brief description, and some books have "Talk About It" questions, that encourage conversation about the book and enhancing the reading experience. There are lessons about reading and discussion about the challenges for boys as readers. Grades K-8.
